FIR against Ranveer Singh for posting Nudity: Explained
What happened?
Mumbai Police registered
an FIR on Tuesday against actor Ranveer Singh for publishing his naked pictures
on social media. Mumbai police filed the FIR under Indian Penal Code (IPC)
Sections 292 (sale of obscene books, etc), 293 (sale of obscene objects to
young people), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a
woman) and provisions of the Information Technology Act. An NGO which is based in
mumbai and a lawyer Vedika Chaubey had approached the Chembur police with a
complaint against the actor Ranveer Singh.
Who registered
the FIR?
The NGO official had
alleged that the actor posted his naked pictures on social media which hurt the
sentiments and feelings of women in general and insulted their modesty through
his pictures he posted. Akhilesh Chaubey, who is an advocate represents the
complainant, said Ranveer Singh was an "A category actor" whose films
"are watched by youth who can easily get influenced by his activities.
Here the pictures are explicit and he seems to have done the photo shoot for
money, he must be penalized."

& Conclusion
Niteen Pradhan (Senior
counsel) said, "Mumbai Police have overreached in registering the FIR
against actor Ranveer Singh... it was not he who sought the publication of the pictures,
it was the media who did the photoshoot, and even if he had intentionally
published it on his social media handle it doesn't amount to an offence. There
is no compulsion (pressure) on any individual to view it, if anyone wants to
understand what art is, can always visit the Khajuraho temple." Advocate
Pranav Badheka said the FIR appears to be "frivolous".
Amit Desai (Senior
counsel) said, "Display a bare body in the picture as it is, should not
under the law constitute obscenity. Nudity as per is not obscene and the picture
itself does not seem to be intended to be lustful or to appeal to the indecent
interest of any individual as is the requirement of IPCs Section 292 for an
offence of publishing explicit material. There is nothing on the face of it
which shows that it tends to degrade or corrupt any individual’s mind
either."
Prahlad Kakkar (Ad
film maker) said, actor Ranveer Singh has posed in this photoshoot for a New
York magazine which isn't meant for publishing here in India, then how can it
be? This complaint is for no consequence, I think the lawyer just wanted cheap
publicity, he said. It's okay for them to go and touch the feet of a naked yogi
in Kumbh Mela for his blessings but they are offended by a nude picture which
isn’t even full frontal but a subtle picture of nudity. What needs to change is
the law and the description of what is considered obscene or lascivious,"
he said.
Point of view
(Personal)
If I talk about my
point of view on this, then I think Ranveer Singh should not be punished for
this because if we look carefully at these pictures (for which the FIR is
filed) then in these pictures we do not get to see the whole part of the body.
I will not count these pictures as fully nude because he is hiding the main
part so there is no reason to get offend and I don’t think these pictures can
hurt any individual’s sentiments. If anyone can’t tolerate this kind of content,
should not follow one. I am not finding it explicit content but if you find
